Today, Governor Rick Scott announced the appointment of J. Layne Smith to the Leon County Court.

Smith, 53, of Tallahassee, currently serves as the General Counsel for the Florida Department of Lottery. He previously served as the General Counsel for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation from 2011-2014. Smith was a partner with Smith, Brooks & Masterson, P.L. from 2004-2011. He began his legal career in 1987 with the Clark Partington law firm. Smith has served on the State Retirement Commission since 2014. He received his bachelor’s and law degrees from Florida State University. Smith fills a vacancy created by the Supreme Court’s Order regarding Judge Judith Hawkins.

Governor Rick Scott said, “J. Layne Smith has the qualities that make a great judge. His years of dedicated service to Florida families has prepared him for his time on the Leon County Court bench.”
