Office of Drug Control Director William H. Janes

Bill JanesColonel (U.S. Army, Ret.) William H. Janes was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist as Director of the Florida Office of Drug Control. The mission of the Office of Drug Control is to coordinate drug control efforts and enlist the assistance of the public and private sectors; to provide information about the problem of substance abuse and the substance abuse programs and services available; to act as the Governor’s liaison with state and federal agencies; to work to secure funding for our state’s efforts; to develop a strategic program; to advise the Governor and Legislature on trends, program status, funding, and implementation of the strategic plan; and to report annually on the status of these efforts.

Mr. Janes served in the US Army for 24 years. He commanded at the company, battalion, and brigade levels. He was the Director of the Army’s only Masters Degree awarding program, the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and a War College Fellow.  He has earned graduate degrees from the Ohio State University, McNeese State University and the U.S. Army Command and Staff College.

After leaving the military, Mr. Janes was a counselor, manager, and executive director for the Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office (DACCO) in Tampa (10 years). DACCO’s comprehensive programs provide prevention and intervention programs for youth; adult prevention, intervention, and treatment (outpatient, day treatment, and residential); Methadone Maintenance; and HIV testing and counseling. He helped form one of the first substance abuse and mental health collaborations in Florida, the Central Florida Behavioral Health Network.  Mr. Janes was selected as the FADAA Outstanding Program Administrator in Florida during 2002.

From 2002-2006, Mr. Janes served as the Director, National Terrorism Preparedness Institute at St Petersburg College. He was the Chairman of the Training Committee of the Tampa Bay Area Region 4 Domestic Security Task Force. As NTPI Director, he was responsible for the development of homeland security and homeland defense training products for the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security-Office for Domestic Preparedness.
