FLORIDA SPACE PROGRAMS

The Florida Space Authority (FSA) was created as a state government space agency in 1989 to foster space-related economic growth and to establish facilities supporting commercial space development opportunities. FSA is broadly empowered to own, operate, construct, finance, acquire, extend, equip and improve space infrastructure for governmental and commercial space clients. FSA also works to develop the nation’s fledgling space tourism industry. It has financed visitor facilities at Kennedy Space Center, provided site location assistance to new space tourism businesses, and advocated at the federal level for space tourism initiatives.

The Florida Space Research Institute (FSRI) was established in 1999 as a statewide center fostering economic growth through space research and technology development, with a special focus on industry needs. Through its private-sector industry-led Board, FSRI establishes the strategic direction for the State’s space-related research priorities. FSRI leverages academic and economic development resources with those of industry, NASA, and the military. One of its key responsibilities is to co-manage, with Kennedy Space Center, Florida’s new state-of the-art Space Life Sciences Laboratory. FSRI has developed significant workforce-training initiatives, in partnership with Workforce Florida, NASA, and several colleges and universities, to meet space industry requirements.

The Florida Aerospace Finance Corporation (FAFC) was created in 1999 to provide a diversified portfolio of financial resources and technical expertise to help the aerospace industry finance a wide variety of projects, including infrastructure, manufacturing, assembly, and launch investments. FAFC partners with other state and federal aerospace, financial, and economic development organizations to bring the best financing package available to its clients and has developed financing relationships with commercial lenders and investment firms throughout the nation.
