p=. Governor Charlie Crist’s Inaugural Sunshine Week Essay Contest Official Rules and Guidelines
Governor Charlie Crist’s Sunshine Week Essay Contest is open to all 9-12 public schools in the state of Florida. Three winners will be selected: one first place, one second place and one third place. Winners will be notified by March 18, 2008.
* Entries must be mailed to Executive Office of the Governor: Sunshine Week Essay Contest, 400 S. Monroe Street, Suite LL08, Tallahassee, FL 32399-0001. *All entries must be received or postmarked by 5:00 p.m. EST, Monday, March 3, 2008.
* Essays should address the following topic: “What role does open government play within a democratic society and a democratic government?”

Each student may enter only one essay.
* Essays should be no longer than 500 words in length and should be typed or handwritten in print only. No cursive writing will be accepted.

A completed parental waiver form must accompany each essay. Click here to obtain a copy of the parental waiver form.
* Essays submitted must include contestant’s name, home address, telephone number, school the student attends, grade level and title of the essay.

The first place winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, the second place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship and the third place winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Winners must be legal residents of the State of Florida.
* Winners will be awarded their scholarships at the Governor’s Sunshine Week celebration to be held in Tallahassee. All travel and lodging will be paid for the winners and two immediate family members.

All essays must be submitted in one of the following formats: Simple text (.txt), Rich Text Format (.rtf), Microsoft Word (.doc).
