TALLAHASSEE — Governor Charlie Crist today recognized Susan Cohen as this week’s Point of Light for outstanding volunteerism. Susan has been a parent surrogate for foster children in the Exceptional Student Education Program at Helen A. Davis Elementary School for five years.

“Susan is the true definition of an advocate and embodies the spirit of Foster Parenting Awareness month,” said Governor Crist. “Her devotion to education and foster children in the state of Florida should serve as an inspiration.”

As a parent surrogate, Susan ensures that the children assigned to her are receiving the best education possible. In order to achieve this goal, Susan reviews each child’s individual education plan to ensure it addresses the child’s specific needs. She participates in arts and crafts projects and small reading groups for children at the school. Throughout the school year, Susan not only rewards the children for a job well done, but also sponsors luncheons for the Exceptional Student Education teachers and staff.

“It is citizens like Susan that make Florida’s communities a better place to live, work and play,” Chief Child Advocate Jim Kallinger said. “Susan leaves a lasting impression on each child’s life she touches.”

Susan serves as a mentor at group foster homes. She reviews children’s files, and gets to know them on an individual basis. Thanks to Susan’s dedication, all birthdays and holidays are remembered and celebrated. She ensures that every child has school supplies, clothing and other necessary items. Most importantly, Susan provides these children with a shoulder to lean on. She encourages them to do well in all aspects of their lives, not just their education.

The Governor’s Points of Light Award, sponsored by Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, recognizes a Florida resident who demonstrates exemplary service to the community.  Award recipients are announced each week.  A panel of judges composed of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the Governor.  The Volunteer Florida Foundation manages the program.  For more information, or to nominate, go to www.VolunteerFloridaFoundation.org.
