TALLAHASSEE – Governor Crist today recognized Henry “Hank” Gill as this week’s Point of Light for exemplary volunteerism. As a volunteer board member for Computer Mentors Group Inc., Henry has committed himself to providing computers and training to low-income residents.
“Hank’s work with Computer Mentors Group shows the huge difference one person can make in improving computer learning,” said Governor Crist. “His efforts bring important opportunities and education for the families who benefit from the programs he has inspired.”
Gill has been involved in many programs that benefit low-income families in his community. Last December, he arranged for computers to be donated to families in need. The success of this program led to the development of a similar program for students going back to school. Gill helped organize the Tech Bowl, a fundraiser to involve community leaders in raising money for computer literacy. His efforts have contributed to programs that enable more than 450 families each year to receive refurbished computers with Microsoft programming and free Internet access.
“You’ll be hard pressed to find a better candidate for this award than Hank,” said executive director of Computer Mentors Group Ralph Smith. “He’s been a real blessing for our organization and has helped push our mission forward to provide computers and training for underprivileged youth.”
The Governor’s Points of Light Award, sponsored by Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, each week recognizes a Florida resident who demonstrates exemplary service to his or her community. A panel of judges composed of Florida volunteers evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to Governor Crist. The nonprofit Volunteer Florida Foundation manages this program.
