TALLAHASSEE — Governor Charlie Crist today recognized Chaplain David Lefavor of Tampa as this week’s Point of Light for outstanding volunteerism. Chaplain Lefavor organized a variety of programs to support wounded veterans and their families recovering in the Tampa Veterans’ Hospital.
“Chaplain David Lefavor has eased the recovery process for many families and veterans far from home,” said Governor Crist. “By honoring others, Chaplain Lefavor celebrates the hard work of the many men and women who have served their country.”
Chaplain Lefavor spearheaded Operation Helping Hand to support families of wounded veterans while they are away from home. Operation Helping Hand offers support dinners, arranges outings for the families and meets the basic needs of family members. The program has directly helped 90 families. Lefavor organized a hospital-wide dinner on Thanksgiving and Christmas days for patients, families and military personnel. He also created Project Gratitude to honor and benefit active duty chaplains as they return from active duty. Project Gratitude honors one chaplain each month.
Chaplain Lefavor is an active volunteer in many organizations that support the Tampa Veterans’ Hospital, including the American Legion Post 152, Association of the United States Army and the Marine Corps League Detachment 1002. He is also a major in the Civil Air Patrol and attached to the Florida Army National Guard as a volunteer chaplain.
The Governor’s Points of Light Award, sponsored by Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, recognizes a Florida resident or organization that demonstrates exemplary service to the community. Award recipients are announced weekly. A panel of judges comprised of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the Governor. The Volunteer Florida Foundation manages the program. For more information, or to nominate, go to www.VolunteerFloridaFoundation.org.
