TALLAHASSEE — Governor Charlie Crist today announced the fourth public meeting of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness on November 14 and 15, 2007, at Keiser University in Fort Lauderdale. During the meeting the council will work to finalize its recommendations regarding the 19 objectives identified in Executive Order 07-52. These recommendations will be presented to the Governor and Legislature by December 1, 2007.
“During the past six months, the council has been working diligently and carefully to formulate their recommendations,” Governor Crist said. “The solutions suggested by this council will lead to innovative approaches to help Floridians live healthier lives. I am grateful to all of the members for their hard work and commitment to making our state healthier.”
The fourth meeting of the council will focus on some of the best ways communities and organizations around the state are encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Representatives from the Office of Greenways and Trails, Florida Action for Healthy Kids and public school physical education programs will address the council during of the two-day meeting. Speakers will highlight how the state’s natural resources and outdoor environments can encourage physical activity among adults and children alike. Additionally, the council will learn more about ways students can be educated on sound nutrition and healthy lifestyles. A portion of both meetings will also be dedicated to hearing public comment.
The 21-member council was appointed by Governor Crist in May 2007 and charged with developing a state plan of action to help reduce the number of Floridians who suffer from chronic illnesses related to obesity.
