WASHINGTON, D.C. – Governor Charlie Crist today joined the “Building America’s Future” coalition, which seeks renewed federal investment in the nation’s aging infrastructure. “Building America’s Future” was launched last month in Los Angeles by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“States have been at the forefront of innovation when it comes to finding solutions and alternatives for delivering our transportation needs,” said Governor Crist. “Today, we call on our federal partners to commit to increase their investment and provide states with the flexibility needed to deliver the first class transportation system our citizens deserve.”

The coalition is comprised of elected and executive officials serving at the state and local levels of government. In the short term, the coalition will work with presidential candidates and the platform committees of the national political parties to ensure that the next president understands the enormity of the infrastructure crisis and is committed to increasing federal funding.  In the long term, the coalition will serve as a repository of best practices on infrastructure funding issues and become a think tank focusing on emerging infrastructure issues.

“We have Republicans, Democrats and Independents from all across the nation. And we are joining together for one reason – to force Washington to get serious about strengthening our nation’s infrastructure. Everyone here knows this is a big national problem that affects our economy and endangers our communities,” said Governor Schwarzenegger.

Governor Crist supported legislation that would enhance Florida’s current Public Private Partnership capabilities allowing us to increase private sector involvement and accelerating much needed infrastructure projects. Governor Crist also supported legislation that would enhance the Turnpike Enterprise by increasing the bond capacity.  This will allow for increased investment by the Turnpike in transportation projects over a 5 year period.

Governor Crist’s recommended budget includes $8.7 billion to meet Florida’s transportation needs. Funding includes:

· Strategic Intermodal System (SIS)
In order to meet the needs Florida is facing, it is crucial that statewide funds are invested in a well-planned transportation system that efficiently connects the various forms of travel.  Governor Crist’s recommended budget provides funding for the Strategic Intermodal System, the state’s top transportation priority.  These critical highways, airports, seaports, railroads and other key transportation assets are essential to Florida’s economy and quality of life.

· Public Transportation
While highways will continue to be the mainstay of the transportation system, various limitations make it necessary to focus on additional means of travel. The recommended budget provides funding to encourage urban areas in the state to expand and enhance transit, aviation, seaport and rail facilities and services.
