TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Governor Rick Scott announced two interim appointments to fill vacancies created by the failure of the Florida Senate to consider them for confirmation before the adjournment sine die of the 2015 legislative session:

Secretary Jon Steverson, Department of Environmental Protection, is appointed as Interim Secretary subject to concurrence by the three members of the Cabinet.

Rick Swearingen, the Executive Director of the Department of Law Enforcement, is appointed as Interim Executive Director subject to approval of three members of the Cabinet.

Under Florida law, the Senate’s failure to consider the appointments for confirmation created a vacancy in each office, effective upon the adjournment sine die of the 2015 legislative session. The Cabinet Governance Guidelines (link) adopted by the Governor and Cabinet call for the Governor to name interim appointees to temporarily fill these vacancies, subject to approval of the interim appointments by the Cabinet. The process of making a permanent appointment will also be governed by the Cabinet Governance Guidelines. These issues have been added to the agenda for the May 5, 2015 meeting of the Governor and Cabinet.
