Governor Scott Announces Citrus County Educator Named Teacher of theYear Finalist

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that Nancy Smith, an English teacher at Citrus High School in Inverness, is a 2014 Department of Education/Macy’s Teacher of the Year finalist. She is one of five educators from throughout the state who will compete for the title. Florida’s Teacher of the Year will be named on July 11, 2013 at Hard Rock Live at Universal Studios CityWalk in Orlando.

Governor Scott said, “I am happy to recognize Nancy Smith as a Teacher of the Year finalist. Florida teachers work hard every day to prepare our students for success when they leave the classroom. I was happy to work with the Florida House and Senate to ensure that every Florida teacher, like Nancy Smith, can get a well-deserved pay raise.”

“The ability to transform children’s lives is the highest privilege any of us can aspire to,” said Florida Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett. “Nancy Smith is committed to preparing her students for college and career. By cultivating a thriving learning environment, her students are reaching higher levels of achievement.”

Smith has 33 years of teaching experience and has taught English at Citrus High School since 2010. In addition to her duties that include teaching Advanced Placement Language and Composition, English Honors, and Intensive Reading, she led the schools’ Advanced Placement team and is a grader for the College Board.

The winner must also show a superior capacity to inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.
