Tallahassee, Fla. — Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Michael Kessie and James Sewell to the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. 
 
Michael Kessie
Kessie, of Bradenton, is the New College of Florida Police Department’s Chief of Police. Previously, he served as a Patrol Officer, Sergeant, Detective Lieutenant, Assistant Chief and Deputy Chief of Operations for the Schererville, Indiana Police Department and Deputy Sheriff for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. Kessie is a member of the Florida Police Chiefs Association, International Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Professionals. 
 
James Sewell
Sewell, of St. Petersburg, is a former Assistant Commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Previously, he was Director of Planning Services for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and Chief of Police and Acting City Manager for the City of Gulfport. Sewell is a member of the Florida Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame and is a member of the Florida Police Chiefs Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He earned a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and PhD in criminology from Florida State University.
